Eastport Alpaca Handpun Yarn

Eastport Alpaca is an ultra soft and perfect blend of 70/30 Alpaca fiber & Merino for strength, warmth and durability.
The fiber comes in a sliver which is a carded preparation which allows me to spin a lovely airy and soft woolen-spun yarn. Each skein of handspun yarn is meticulously spun by hand in my home studio on my Louet S45 to a 2 ply yarn that is luscious and bouncy with spectacular drape.

Eastport Alpaca is a beautiful, soft, sturdy and warm yarn. Eastport fiber is “home grown” with fiber coming from a collective of over 25 American family farms where the Alpaca’s are raised and the fiber harvested. The fiber collected is then pooled and sorted to create wonderful 70/30 Alpaca/Merino blend.
The town of Eastport is a small, remote fishing village located at the most eastern point in the United States. With its long, cold winters, Eastport offers a space and the time for fireplaces and hot chocolate to work on those projects that will be special and enduring.  To my dismay this fiber is no longer available at my supplier but I do have a supply in my stash that should last for a while.

Suggested Uses

This yarn is suitable for wearing next to the skin and is especially suitable for knitting for baby. It would be lovely spun in a lace weight for a scarf or a lightweight shawl, in Sport, DK or Worsted weight for sweaters, hats and mitts, gloves, scarves, neckwarmers, blankets or shawls, baby sweaters and baby blankets, almost anything you can dream up.

Alpaca

The fiber these marvelous and very beautiful animals provide for us has several unique characteristics. Alpaca fiber is warm and soft making it very comfortable to wear while the superior draping qualities help make a unique fashion statement.
Yarn spun from the Alpaca fiber is durable and light as well as soft and silky. It is even warmer than wool, repels water and when it does get wet, like wool, it is still thermal. Unlike wool, however, it is not prickly and is thus hypo allergic….. More about Alpaca

Merino Wool

A natural protein fiber, Wool is probably the most popular choice of fibers when warmth, weather proofing and durability are desired. Wool is warm, even when wet, absorbs moisture and takes dyes very well although it also comes in many different natural colours. Because softness is one of the characteristics that I personally prefer in a yarn or garment most of our handknits and handspun yarns made of wool are from Merino fleeces or other very soft wools such as Polwarth. …. More about Wool

Care

Please use a gently wool wash such as “Soak”. The yarn or garment made from this yarn may be hand washed in lukewarm to cold water. Gently squeeze out excess moisture, roll in a towel to release more moisture and lay flat to dry away from direct heat and sun.[space]
